Shutting down automatically.. how to stop?

Well, I'm not sure why my computer is doing this, but, after five minutes of turning on the computer, and logging into Windows, my computer shuts down automatically.  I'm not sure what the cause of this can be.  Is there a remedy to this problem?

Those are good suggestions, the only other thing i would check is an instance I ran into this week at work.  A machine would shut down randomly and stay down for an odd peoriod of time.  Make sure that all cards and parts of the MB are not touching the metal completing a circuit.  I had an old voicemail server that would shut down .. turns out the voicemail module card sagged down to the bottom of the box and was touching the metal, shorting it out and shutting it down.

1. If you are using an AMD cpu and Asus motherboard with C.O.P. (CPU Overheat Protection) and the heatsink fan is not working then the system will shut down...

2. Power Management Settings...might be set to hibernate/turn off in 5 minutes with no activity

3. Check surge protector and moniter power supply settings
www.download.com (search for power or cpu monitors)

4. May very well be unstable RAM...
www.download.com (search for free RAM testers)

5. Clean Registry (Registry may be bloated)
Use Regclean.exe
I think QBIK hit the nail on the head here, many motherboards (not just Asus) now have a feature in the bios that monitors the temps and fans and can shut down the computer if something bad is detected.

The Power Management is another good suggestion, had one a few weeks ago that someone accidently set to go into hibernation and didn't realize they did it.  They thought the computer was actually shut off because you couldn't hear any fans and for some reason the power light went out instead of blinking.

Best Regards,

Scott

sorry for the long wait
Hello,

I am having a problem with a computer shutting down directly after logging into windows. I have have created a brand new account on the computer and the problem still happens with that account. If I leave the computer at the log in screen it will not shut down. It is the minute I log in when the computer shuts down. The problem does not happen in Safe Mode. I have performed a full virus scan in safe mode with definitions as new as 8-10-05. I have disabled all startup items in msconfig, and the run in the registry. Help!

I have found the solution to my problem. There was a UPS installed in the power options in the control panel that was no longer being used. When the computer would boot up it would look for a UPS unit. When the computer could not find a UPS unit it would then shut down thinking there was a power outage.
