Recover removable flash drive reporting "not formatted"

When the Lexar USB adapter stays plugged in on either my Win2000 or Win98 PC, I can remove (hot swap) my flash drive from it without trouble -- assuming Windows is stable and files on the drive are not open. The SanDisk drive is a 350Mb PCMCIA/PC card ATA type from my laptop.

When I'm not hot-swapping it, I usually remove it after Windows has shut down but before hardware has powered off. It has worked fine for months before like this -- no major or minor glitches on these two PCs using an identical Lexar USB adapter, nor on the laptop

The problem is now it only says "not formatted" when trying to access it from any of these three computers. This is likely because it was removed when when Windows froze during a recent shut down on the Win2000 PC.

I would not have removed it before shutting down, but the monitor was turned off and didn't see that shutdown had failed/PC was frozen. So, how do I recover the data on it?

A lot of those I just posted have demo versions you can try before you buy. I noticed the following does work with Flash cards but I don't know about the rest of those in the list

Gee, couldn't you have been a little more comprehensive (joke)? Thanks!!!
I've installed and run all the ones that offer a trial or are free, as well as Winternals FileRestore ($39) and none can see my drive. I'm considering doing a quick format of the drive so that the restore software can see it. Any suggestions for how to best make the drive findable by restore software?
I've also wheedled free trials on some that don't say so on their web page. Still no luck. But I think it's important to add your answer to the knowledge base -- it's such a comprehensive list, and will be helpful for others looking for a solution.
Thank you!  PC Inspector, the first free tool on your list, worked perfectly.  It searched the drive for files to rescue and allowed me to "save to" a folder on my hard drive.  All files recovered with no problem.  Then I reformated the flash memory, as Windows kept requesting to do, and the key now seems to be usable once again.
Again, thanks for the assistance, and glad it worked for Z_cat! Unfortunately, I didn't recover any data myself.
